From swimming alongside Whale Sharks to watching Humpback Whales breach across turquoise waters, the Ningaloo Reef offers incredible wildlife experiences throughout the year.
But the “best” time to visit really depends on what you want to see and experience.
Whether you’re dreaming of snorkelling with gentle giants, spotting migrating whales, or simply relaxing on a luxury reef cruise, here’s a month-by-month guide to help you plan the perfect Ningaloo adventure.
March to July – Whale Shark Season
For many visitors, this is the ultimate time to visit Ningaloo Reef.
Each year, Whale Sharks gather along the reef following the coral spawning event, creating one of the most famous wildlife encounters in Australia. Despite their enormous size, Whale Sharks are gentle filter feeders and an unforgettable species to swim beside.
Best for:
Swimming with Whale Sharks
Warm weather and clear water
Snorkelling and reef tours
Bucket-list wildlife experiences
Conditions:
Water temperatures generally range from 23–28°C
Calm mornings are common
Peak season for visitors and tours
If swimming with Whale Sharks is on your list, booking early is highly recommended, especially during school holidays and peak winter travel periods.
June to October – Humpback Whale Season
As Whale Shark season begins winding down, another spectacular migration arrives.
Thousands of Humpback Whales travel along the Western Australian coastline each year, and the waters surrounding Ningaloo Reef become an incredible place to witness them.
Depending on the tour, guests may experience:
Whale watching cruises
Close surface encounters
Mothers and calves resting in sheltered waters
Opportunities to swim with Humpback Whales later in the season
Best for:
Whale watching
Photography
Families and non-swimmers
Sunset cruises and calmer winter weather
This period is often considered one of the most scenic times to visit Exmouth, with mild temperatures and stunning ocean conditions.
Year-Round Marine Life
One of the reasons the Ningaloo Reef is so special is that wildlife encounters happen all year round.
Depending on the season and conditions, visitors may also encounter:
Manta Rays
Dolphins
Sea Turtles
Dugongs
Reef Sharks
Hundreds of species of tropical fish
The reef itself is stunning in every season, making Ningaloo an incredible destination even outside the major migration periods.
What About the Weather?
Unlike many tropical destinations, Ningaloo Reef enjoys plenty of sunshine throughout the year.
Seasonal Overview:
Summer (Dec–Feb): Hot temperatures and quieter tourism season with turtle nesting and hatchlings
Autumn (Mar–May): Warm water and start of Whale Shark season
Winter (Jun–Aug): Mild weather and peak humpback whale activity
Spring (Sep–Nov): Beautiful temperatures and excellent whale watching
Winter temperatures are generally very comfortable compared to southern Australia, making Ningaloo a popular escape during colder months.
