Planning a trip to Exmouth is the first step toward experiencing the incredible Ningaloo Reef.
Whether you're here to swim with Whale Sharks, encounter manta rays, or explore one of Australia’s most beautiful coastal regions, a little planning goes a long way in making the most of your visit.
Exmouth sits approximately 1,250km north of Perth on the North West Cape and is the closest town to the northern end of Ningaloo Reef.
It’s remote, wild, and absolutely worth the journey.
At Ocean Eco Adventures, we’re often asked the same question — when is the best time to visit Ningaloo? The answer depends entirely on what you want to experience.
🐋 When Is the Best Time to Visit Ningaloo Reef?
One of the most unique things about Ningaloo Reef is that there is no single “best” time to visit — it depends on the wildlife you want to see.
🐋 Whale Sharks & 🐋 Manta Rays (Seasonal Choice + Year-Round Option)
🐋 Whale Shark Season (March – July)
If swimming with Whale Sharks is on your bucket list, this is the time to visit.
These gentle giants gather along the reef during seasonal plankton blooms, creating one of the most unforgettable wildlife encounters in the world.
Because this is peak season, we always recommend booking early as tours fill quickly.
🐋 Manta Rays (Year-Round – Coral Bay)
Manta rays can be seen on the Ningaloo Reef throughout the year, particularly around Coral Bay.
Known as the “diamonds of the sea,” they are one of the most consistent and breathtaking wildlife encounters in the region.
Day trips from Exmouth to Coral Bay offer the chance to swim alongside them in their natural environment.
🌊 The Big 3 of Ningaloo Reef
Together, Whale Sharks, Humpback Whales, and Manta Rays make up what we call the Big 3 of Ningaloo Reef.
If you are visiting between March and July, there is even the opportunity to experience both Whale Sharks and Manta Rays within the same trip.
If you're visiting later in the year, the focus naturally shifts toward Humpback Whales and sunset whale watching experiences.
No matter when you visit, Ningaloo Reef is always full of life.
🚗 How to Get to Exmouth
Exmouth is remote, and that’s part of what makes it so special.
Most visitors either:
Drive from Perth (approximately 12–13 hours), or
Fly into Learmonth Airport, just outside Exmouth
If you fly, I would highly recommend hiring a car for at least a day or two so you can explore the Cape Range National Park at your own pace.
Alternatively, most tours in the region offer transfers or pick-up services, so it’s still very easy to experience the highlights without a vehicle.
The drive itself is part of the journey, passing through some of Western Australia’s most open and untouched landscapes.
🌴 Where to Stay in Exmouth
Accommodation in Exmouth ranges from relaxed to luxury, including:
Caravan parks and camping grounds
Self-contained villas and holiday homes
Eco stays and boutique accommodation
Resort-style options in town
If you're visiting during peak season (especially Whale Shark season), booking accommodation early is essential.
🌅 The Ultimate 5-Day Exmouth Itinerary
🌴 Day 1 – Arrival, Beach Time & Vlamingh Head Sunset
After arriving in Exmouth and settling into your accommodation, take the afternoon to slow down and ease into the rhythm of the Ningaloo coastline.
One of the best easy-access beaches is Bundegi Beach, perfect for a relaxed swim, picnic, or sunset wind-down.
Once you’ve had your first taste of the ocean, head out to Vlamingh Head Lighthouse.
This is one of the only places in Western Australia where you can see both sunrise and sunset over the ocean, making it one of the most iconic viewpoints in Exmouth.
There is no better way to experience your first Ningaloo sunset.

🐋 Day 2 – Whale Shark Swim OR Coral Bay Manta Ray Experience
Today is often the highlight of the entire trip — and your experience will depend on the season.
🐋 Whale Shark Swim (March – July)
If you're visiting during whale shark season, this is a true bucket list experience.
Swimming alongside the largest fish in the ocean is something people travel from all over the world to experience.
A typical tour lasts around 7–8 hours and includes time on the boat, snorkelling opportunities, and wildlife spotting along the reef.
It’s a full day on the water — and usually best followed by a quiet evening and early night.
🐋 Coral Bay Exclusive - Manta Ray Experience (Year-Round – Coral Bay)
If you're not in whale shark season, or you simply want another unforgettable encounter, a day trip to Coral Bay offers the chance to swim with manta rays.
At Ocean Eco Adventures, we offer a return transfer and full-day Coral Bay experience aboard Wirraji, Australia’s first electric ocean-going charter vessel.
Here you may encounter manta rays, turtles, reef fish, and seasonal marine life in crystal-clear waters.
🌊 Day 3 – Cape Range National Park & Yardie Creek
Today is all about exploring the land-meets-sea beauty of Ningaloo.
The Cape Range National Park is a must-visit, offering rugged gorges, coastal cliffs, and world-class snorkelling straight from the beach.
A great plan for the day:
Pack breakfast, lunch, water, snorkel gear, and reef-safe sunscreen
Head into the national park early
Enjoy a short hike or lookout stop
Arrive at Yardie Creek for your boat cruise
The Yardie Creek Boat Cruise is one of the most unique experiences in the region, located at the southern end of the park.
After your cruise, spend the afternoon snorkelling.
Turquoise Bay – famous drift snorkel (advanced) + calm bay option
Oyster Stacks – tide-dependent and best at mid/high tide
Lakeside – quieter coral-rich reef
Always follow local signage and reef protection rules — Ningaloo is strictly “look but don’t touch.”
✈️ Day 4 – Aerial Adventure OR Glass Bottom Boat
Today is about seeing Ningaloo from a completely different perspective.
✈️ Scenic Flight (Microlight flight with Birds Eye View)
Experience the reef from above with a 30–90 minute scenic flight.
From the air, you’ll see the full scale of Cape Range, Ningaloo Reef, and the coastline — something you simply cannot appreciate from the ground.
It’s peaceful, breathtaking, and surprisingly calming.
🌊 Glass Bottom Boat Cruise
If flying isn’t for you, a glass bottom boat cruise offers a relaxed way to explore the reef without getting in the water.
Perfect for families or those wanting a slower-paced marine experience.

🌅 Day 5 – Cape Range Exploration & Sunset Whale Watching (Seasonal)
Spend your final full day revisiting Cape Range National Park or exploring new snorkelling sites depending on tides and conditions.
A great optional hike is Mandu Mandu Gorge, offering panoramic views over the reef and a chance to spot black-flanked rock wallabies.
🌅 Sunset Whale Watching (August – November)
If you're visiting during whale season, there is no better way to end your trip.
Departing from Exmouth Marina, sunset whale watching cruises offer a peaceful and emotional final experience on the water.
As the sun sets over Cape Range, humpback whales can often be seen breaching, tail slapping, or resting with their calves in the calm waters of the Exmouth Gulf.
With spacious decks, gourmet platters, and a relaxed atmosphere onboard, it’s a truly unforgettable way to finish your Ningaloo journey.
💙 Final Thoughts
The Ningaloo Reef is not just a destination — it’s an experience that changes depending on when you visit, what you choose to do, and how much time you give yourself to slow down and take it in.
Whether you’re here for Whale Sharks, manta rays, humpback whales, or simply the beauty of the coastline, Exmouth delivers something different every single time.
And that’s what makes it unforgettable.

Such a great help when planning my Ningaloo trip for next year!
